school as soon as possible to find out about local registration procedures.<\/li><li>Students generally start secondary school at the age of 12.<\/li><li>However, you need to start choosing your secondary school early. Many secondary schools select students as early as the beginning of grade 5.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Compulsory school attendance<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>School is compulsory for all children up to the age of 16.<\/li><li>Student absences must be justi\ufb01ed by a parent. in the event of prolonged or frequent unexcused absences, the school must report possible parental neglect to the Direction de la protection de la jeunesse (DPJ).<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>School obligations<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Although school attendance is compulsory until the age of 16, a child has the right to attend secondary school until the age of 18 (21 for disabled pupils).<\/li><li>There are 5 grades in secondary school.<\/li><li>Teachers must communicate regularly with parents to keep them informed of their child&#8217;s learning.<\/li><li>When a child is experiencing difficulties, school staff must inform and work in collaboration with parents.<\/li><li>Grade repetition is allowed only once throughout primary school. <a href=\"http:\/\/rire.ctreq.qc.ca\/2017\/12\/redoublement-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">However, many<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/numerique.banq.qc.ca\/patrimoine\/details\/52327\/49245\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener ugc\">researchers are sowing doubts about the positive effects of this practice.<\/a> If your child is proposed to repeat a grade, the school must demonstrate that no other means will be more effective in promoting his\/her success. Your child must also receive support during the year of repetition.<\/li><li>Obtaining a Secondary School Diploma (SSD) is extremely important for accessing higher education and the job market.<\/li><li>Some programs do not lead to a SSD.<\/li><li>Work-Oriented Training path<\/li><li>Vocational training<\/li><li>The school may want to place a child in these programs from the age of 15.<\/li><li>These programs are aimed at children with severe learning difficulties who have very little chance of finishing secondary school.<\/li><li>These programs are designed to train children for trades such as cook&#8217;s helper, farm laborer in animal production, vehicle cleaner and public building maintenance worker.<\/li><li>The school is obliged to inform parents when it wishes to refer a child to these programs. href=\"https:\/\/www.quebec.ca\/en\/education\/prescolaire-primaire-et-secondaire\/droits-eleve\/report-an-act-of-sexual-violence-against-a-student\">complaint concerning an act of sexual violence may be made directly to the regional student ombudsman<\/a>, omitting the first two steps of the process. These complaints are fast-tracked.<\/p><p>The regional student ombudsman forwards the complaint to the educational institution, unless he or she has reasonable grounds to believe that this would hamper the investigation, or the complainant objects to the transmission of the complaint.<\/p><h3>\u00a0<\/h3><h4>Step 1<\/h4><p>To file a complaint, you must first contact the person directly concerned or his or her immediate superior.<\/p><p>You can make your complaint verbally first, but make sure it&#8217;s also made in writing (e-mail). This will keep a record of the exchanges and make it easier to calculate the time required for processing.<\/p><p>The person receiving the complaint has <strong>10 working days\u00a0<\/strong>to respond.<\/p><h4>Step 2<\/h4><p>If you remain dissatisfied with the handling of your complaint, or if the 10-working-day time limit has passed, you must contact the person responsible for handling complaints at the school service center, school board or private educational institution.<\/p><p>Keep a record of the steps you&#8217;ve taken. Complaints must be processed within <strong>15 working days<\/strong>.<\/p><h4>Step 3<\/h4><p>If you are still dissatisfied with the way your complaint has been handled, or if the 15-working-day time limit has passed, you should contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.quebec.ca\/en\/education\/prescolaire-primaire-et-secondaire\/droits-eleve\/file-a-complaint\">Regional Student Ombudsman in your area.<\/a> The ombudsman will assist you in formulating your complaint in writing.<\/p><ul><li>This is done using <a href=\"https:\/\/pne.gouv.qc.ca\/portal#\/portal-request-form\/7cd4e09a-a5c8-4fdb-9588-4a8d73f87640\">an online form.<\/a><\/li><li>A complaint concerning an act of sexual violence can be made to the student&#8217;s regional ombudsman, without having to go through the first two stages of the process.
